The Toronto Blue Jays will don special jerseys and hats as the American clubs celebrate Memorial Day and Independence Day. The answer is it’s being done in tribute of Hank Aaron, one of the greatest home run hitters of all time. Aaron, who died earlier this year, wore the number 44 during all but one of his Major League seasons with the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, and Milwaukee Brewers. However, fans tuning in to the July 12 festivities noticed all the players participating in the Home Run Derby were wearing No. 44. “Home Run Derby” debuted in April 1960 and ran weekly throughout the summer.
This fashion decision may be more divisive than you think. A Twitter poll has indicated a tie between the purple jersey and the black vest. Eight big-time sluggers took the field on July 12 to compete in the Home Run Derby. Coaches, pitchers and position players wore uniforms with No. 44 during workouts in honor of the Hall of Famer and Braves legend Henry Aaron, who died in January. With the Homerun derby being over and the all star game finishing up, I would like to cover what happened in both events and give an overview of the results. Both were very entertaining events although these years all star game was okay. I will cover the homerun derby then cover the all star game.
